Nativity Costumes

Mary and Joseph Costume

The Mary Child Costume shown above includes a pale blue robe which has gold trim, a white inlet and with a matching headpiece. The Joseph child costume shown above includes a caftan robe with a contrasting inset and lace-up neckline. It includes a matching shepherd’s headpiece.

The story of the nativity starts in the town of Nazareth where Mary is engaged to married to Joseph, a carpenter. An angel appeared to Mary and told her that her baby had been chosen to be the son of God and she must call him Jesus.

Soon after this vision, Mary and Joseph were married and started on the long journey to Bethlehem to register in the census for tax purposes. On arrival in Bethlehem they tried to find somewhere to say but everywhere was full. Eventually a kindly innkeeper said that the couple could stay in his stable. Just a few hours later, Mary gave birth to this special child chosen by God, wrapped him in bands of cloth and laid him in a manger full of hay.

Shepherds Costume

The Sheperd Boy Costume on the left is includes a multicolor robe with gold accents & a solid color inlet. A matching headpiece is also included to complete this design.

During the time of the birth of Jesus, on a hillside overlooking the town of Bethlehem, some shepherds were watching over their sheep. In the sky appeared a bright light, an angel telling them of the good news that the Son of God had been born and he would be found in Bethlehem. They do as the angel tells them and go the stable where they find Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus in the manger.

Far, far away a bright star appears in the sky and reveals to the Three Wise men that a special child has been born. The Three Wise men or magi (costumes shown above) follow the star to Bethlehem where they find Jesus. With them they bring precious gifts to present to Jesus; Melchior gives the gift of gold, Balthazar the gift of frankincense and Gaspar, the gift of myrrh.

If you want to know more about the story of the Nativity, then why not watch The Nativity Story, a 2006 movie starring Keisha Castle-Hughes as Mary.

Another film Nativity due to be released in November 2009 is a British comedy starring Martin Freeman of The Office and Ashley Jensen of Extras and Ugly Betty. It tells the story of a frustrated primary school teacher, Mr Madden, who every year competes with a local private school to see who can put on the best Nativity play. Unfortunately, Mr Madden’s production always comes second. He then tries to enlist the help of his ex-girlfriend, a Hollywood producer, to turn his production into a Hollywood film. Lots of fun for all the family.
